I was pretty shocked by the video and the lack of response in the bystanders. From what I've read/heard, people in China are wary of helping people in situations like this because they don't want to be associated/punished for the crime.
This somewhat restored my faith in humanity. Then this destroyed that faith once more.
For those who don't want to read the articles, the first just talks about the toddler's rescuer who didn't worry about being blamed and helped the child when so many others just walked by. The second describes how the rescuer has since been forced to leave her home because her neighbours think she rescued the toddler for the fame.
Both links courtesy of Reddit.

You know those days where you hate the world?
This is one of them.

This is clearly sad, I hear and read about horrible things in the world, but my gosh this is worse thing I ever read, it made "What would you do?" look actually look bit more nice! But I disagree with RememberTwice, they not afraid of crime punishment, it's just human nature to see emergency, ignore and walk away, since the individual believes it's not their duty to interact. Sad but true

I was actually sick to my stomach reading this story and seeing the video. Its absolutely horrific! I didn't think it was possible for people to let that happen. I'm....speechless.

I'm not going to see the video, and from what I've heard of it...wow. Wow.
It's like the bystander effect or something...but that can't be so strong as to leave someone watching a toddler...? Ugh. That's just so sad.

No, it's happened before in China in well-publicized cases, where a good samaritan ends up getting blamed for causing the accident and sued for all they're worth. If they were afraid of punishment, it was with good reason, based on prior events.

LOL.
I love how people here are condemning humanity, saying they've lost faith etc.
When I can guarantee that all you internet white knights out there would have done the same thing given similar circumstances.
Getting raped up the ass by prosecutors.
And I am in no way supporting what was done, I just don't agree with most of you here.

I've heard from numerous Chinese people that that's just an excuse. In reality, most people either don't care or don't want to get involved. It's a problem with the culture that has arisen within the last 50 or so years (probably to do with Mao, overpopulation, urbanization and all that).
