7) SIX WORLD DRAMA PREMIERES WILL BE FEATURED IN HONOUR PERFORMANCE SERIES AT McMASTER UNIVERSITY’S ANNUAL WINTER DRAMA EVENT FROM MID JANUARY UNTIL MARCH 2009

McMaster University’s School of the Arts Theatre and Film Studies Program is pleased to announce the production of six world premieres that encompass the creative and original initiatives of the Graduating Class of 2009. This series of six new works begins on January 15th and runs until March 6, 2009 at two locations: Commons Basement Room B108 and the Robinson Memorial Theatre, Chester New
Hall, at McMaster University. Free Admission for all plays , show times for the dates detailed in this release are 12:30 p.m and 8:00 p.m. for the run of the drama series, unless otherwise noted.

The Honours Performance Series is the fruition of four years of learning and education in theatre and film. Each production is conceived, written and directed by students and the range and depth of their creativity is always a wonder to behold. This year’s series shows the usual range of humour, drama and innovative design and staging. This is not mainstream theatre for the middle-aged, this is vibrant, new theatre that engages a young audience with the issues of their time.

The series is supervised by Dr. Peter Cockett and is designed to allow the graduating class full scope to explore the theories and practices they have studied in their time at McMaster. Rather than forcing young students into early specializations the program encourages students to master all aspects of theatrical art to better equip them for their future careers. The emphasis of the program and in the series is on creative agency. The Theatre and Film Studies Program aims to train self-producers rather than specialist artists dependent on others for work. The skills learnt have proved highly transferable to the many other career paths chosen by graduates of the program.

Fourth in the series is McMaster’s newest Canadian musical “Show Me Your Maple” running from February 12 and 13th is written and directed by Haley Bulmer, Meaghan Doupe and Kathleen McGrath. "Three Canucks decide to get out of their respective provinces. From there, they cross boarders and oceans, and have life-altering encounters. Holding on to their Canadian identity while learning the ins and outs of another country, it is an exciting journey full of airplanes, accents, and
adventure."

Fifth in the series is “Casket Cases” running February 26th and 27th, written and directed by T.J. Casey, Sandra Ellis and Lindsay Nicol. This dark and unconventional musical comedy explores a different side of death and the grieving process. Why? Because you can't spell 'funeral' without 'fun'!"

Sixth in the series is “The Opportunist” running from March 5th and 6th is written and directed by Steve Gignac, Ashley McAskill and Jim Molloy. The Opportunist is the story of a man who was about to secure what seemed to be the perfect life when he succumbed to a temptation that would ruin it all. He finds himself needing to cover up his own indulgences in order to regain his life of comfort, no matter what it takes. "The Opportunist" has the aesthetic of a 1930s film noir and will be a play and a film simultaneously.
