Woman Faked Cancer, Charged with Fraud

Long story short, a girl told many many people various lies about having various types of cancer and being very close to death, started an organization "Change for a Cure" to raise money for cancer research, then disappeared with all of the money and declared bankruptcy. She has been charged with fraud under $5000, although the possible amount of money raised could be way more.

Moral of the story, double-check to make sure any charity you're trying to donate to is registered with the CRA!
It's a great cause, let's hope she didn't ruin it for someone else who actually legitimately does need the money.

Edit: I thought I posted this in general discussion...not sure how it ended up in careers :S

In other news, a woman was seen asking for money for no reason at all. Mind you she didn't accept change or even $20 bills. (Westdale near CIBC branch, yesterday)

This reminds me of a time where a my friend gave some random woman 20 bucks (and I think she was in an Audi or something)

Quite a few of my friends were involved in this organization and became very close to her. This is all so unfortunate..
I don't think any legal action can be taken, since she never registered Change for a Cure as an official charity, but I hope she gets in some sort of trouble.

Her parents had her checked into a hospital for weeks for mental illness, and the doctors said she was perfectly fine. So it looks like she's just a really horrible person. :(

EDIT: She has been arrested, but on a pretty small charge. I doubt much will happen.

she's been charged with 3 counts of fraud under $5000, so hopefully SOME legal action can be taken...
max sentence is 2yrs for that, though.
