A Word from the I-Just-Got-Ripped-Off Wise
A Word from the I-Just-Got-Ripped-Off Wise
I'm sure you all know the Credit Union ATM by La Piazza in MUSC? It's great right? It only charges 1.00 surcharge instead of the 1.50 that CIBC charges.
Yeah well it doesn't seem to be working right about now. It took money from my bank account and didn't give me any cash. I now have to go through an investigation with my bank and there's no guarantee that I'll get my money back.
Just go to CIBC and pay the extra .50 cents.

That sucks... I really wish BMO would put a branch (or at least an ATM) somewhere near campus so I don't have to pay $1.50 or go to downtown/Dundas just to get money.

I've had the campus cash machine down near Quarters screw me over before. It has errors on the screen on numerous occasions. One time it gave me a $20 bill that was ripped in half! In fact, there was only about 40% of the bill actually intact - the other half completely missing, not even able to tape it back together!
Haven't had a problem with the Credit Union ATM yet.

In the long run, you are probably better off opening up an account at CIBC or PC banking, just in terms of convenience and avoiding those fees.

I think every place should take credit cards. Having a credit card has saved my life. As long as you only spend what you have, it is amazing! You don't have to worry about paying extra if you exceed your transaction count. Plus, all you have to do is sign-- and sometimes you don't even need to do that! No typing in pin numbers, it's quick and easy! Unfortunately, many people tend to overspend.

i agree, if you spend what you have, having a credit card makes things easier - i have one, and when i get home after using it i go online and transfer money to it so that i don't have to think about it

But if you need cash a credit card doesn't help you (no clubs on campus and no eateries take credit cards).
And if you are going to take money out using your credit card you need to know your credit card's pin number.

best atm on campus without question was the one in the pheonix, yes it was a 1.50 charge, but it gave out combinations of 5s, which was the most useful thing ever, especially when the service desks dont give change for 20s.

I had no idea that one gave out 5 dollar bills! I didn't think any ATM could do that!

The SRA services committee is looking into a cash-back system in the union market. I believe the plan is that you could go there, buy whatever you want. Then, you can pay on your debit card and ask for cash back. You would not get charged those crazy bank fees this way and you could instead spend that money on candy!!!
And because you're shopping at the union market, any profit that is made goes back into the MSU and into student services.
..this is currently in the works. So, if you like the idea, tell your services committee to git 'er dun - [email protected] ter.ca

walmart does that then you buy with a debit card. The machine you type your pin in and confirm the purchase asks if you want cash back and how much you want ($20, 40, etc) and you can enter an amount and then the cashier gives you it in cash from the cash register before you leave. No fees. Pretty neat!
