Wordpress Loop Question

So I'm designing a wordpress layout, and am having trouble grasping my head around wordpress loops in order to create a customized blog page separate from the homepage.

I am using the theme thematic, and have created a "custom child theme".

Does anyone have any resources or pointers for beginners to wordpress loops, or have a knowledge base about wordpress to answer my specific questions?
