They want to see how smart your year is coming out of high school compared to previous years. The purpose of it is to not stress over it, and write it the best you can from your high school knowledge!

Nah, its actually really. Pretty much the only math test I passed the whole year.

Yah, your schedule looks hectic. We've all been there. Just do as everyone says. The key is balance. Learn to balance social and academic parts of your life and manage your time well and you will be good to go! Make sure you have one homework free night a week that you can just chill and do what you want, like watch a movie, go on a date, party, game COD, workout, whatever. Just make sure you leave time for yourself and your brain to chill, cause you will go crazy if you don't! And its not healthy to study ALL the time and have no breaks.

As for the math test, its a piece of cake. Don't worry about it. I didn't study for mine and I did fine!

When I look back at first year, it was soft compared to what we have now.

I found that one of the biggest challenges i faced in university was really... myself. I know that sounds cheesy, or like some poster from your guidance counsellor's office, but its true.

I kept hearing so manypeople tell me how ridiculous first year was, and how I should just accept that my grades would drop by ~20%, that I seriously didn't work as hard as i could have. I'm going into fourth year now, and I do more school work work, I'm much more involved in extracurriculars, have waaaay more of a social life than I ever did in first year and I get MUCH better grades because I stopped thinking that it was fine to do as crappily as everyone else around me was doing.

Sure you probably shouldn't expect a 12.0 average (~90%) but there's no reason your grades should drop if you stay on top of your work. Do the practice problems, go to class, and stay away from CAPA discussion boards. Deactivate facebook, and move into the libraries around midterm season, and ignore all the people around you that make it seem as though a 4.0 GPA is something that happens to "everyone" after first year.

Just my two cents.

Find some eng friends to study with. Chances are that they will understand stuff that you don't and vice versa, and it makes a great way to learn concepts. also, helping other ppl with the things you do know will only help you to understand it better. (and then if no one understands it you can stop feeling so bad, and all of you can find a TA or something:p)
but make sure you find some productive friends. lol, sometimes in first yr group motivation was amazing and we pushed eachother to study way more than we would have alone. other times... well it wasn't as effective.
and go to class:p sometimes i think going to class and falling asleep is enough to absorb something... which is better than nothing at all. lol
good luck!

Where do you guys get your books from?
Should I wait till the first day of classes to get them?
For the course Math 1ZA3 CO2, it says i need Maple 14 is this the same Maple 14 software for Engineering 1CO3?

You can get books from everywhere. Titles, Students, eBay, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the list goes on and on and on.

You should ALWAYS wait until the first day of classes to get books. The professor could always change his mind and if he doesn't notify titles then you won't know the book list changed.

Physics 1D03 and 1E03 : Do Capa. By this I don't mean, using discussion board to solve all problems and obtain the allotted 2.5% for the entire CAPA.

Math : Read the chapter. Do the suggested problems.

Materials : Have Dr. Zurob as prof. Use e-book to do assignments.

Eng 1P03 : Do nothing

Eng 1C03 : Start the project early. Do well on labs and tutorials.

Eng 1D04 : Either you know programming or you don't.

Chem : Take labs seriously, do the readings or else you'll fall behind.

Do as said and you should do great.

The best source for books is the Titles bookstore and the tank. Other is students for second hand books.

http://titles.mcmaster.ca/text/departments.htm
Go to the above link to find out if your professor has announced the book he will be using. For example for Engineer 1P03, click on Engineer (Degree and Certificate) on the page and then Engineer 1P03. For Math 1ZA3, click on Mathematics and then 1ZA3.

Although different editions don't matter that much in my opinion. Only in the exercises the problem numbers might be changed. The chapter matter remains the same.

No last year we used Maple 13 for math and SolidEdge for Engineer 1C03. So it should be SolidEdge this year for Engineer 1C03 too.
