Advice for first year soc sci going into honours econ.
I'm in first year social sciences, and want to go into honours economics. Do I need any maths for first year, and what classes would be helpful/useless in an econ major. Here is my schedule as it currently stands:

Term 1:

ANTHRO 1A03
ECON 1B03
POL SCI 1G06
PSYCH 1X03
SOCIOL 1A06

Term 2:

ECON 1BB3
ENVIRO SCI 1B03
GEOG 1HA3
POLI SCI 1G06
SOCIOL 1A06

These are the requirements for Honours Economics: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1679.html

You need at least a 6 CA (the actual cutoff will likely be higher), as well as a combined 7 average in Econ 1B03/1BB3.

Math 1M03 is strongly recommended, and is also a prerequisite for some upper-level economics courses. You can take this course in second/third year if you want, but if you can, try to get it out of the way

thanks,

any suggestions on courses i should take / drop. I was thinking of dropping anthropology and psych. I only took them because i didn't know what i was going into. Now I'm stuck with them since most classes are full.

If you have an interest in them, then even though they aren't required for economics there's nothing wrong with keeping them. You might take anthro and love it and decide to major in that instead, or you could end up hating econ and have to find a different major. Of course, if you only took anthro and psych as 'filler' courses and have absolutely no interest in them, then you should switch them if you can. It depends what your interests are in, though. Are there any other majors that seem interesting where you're only missing 1-2 prereqs? That might be worth looking into, so you can keep your options open just in case.

one last thing, do i need any maths for first year if i want to minor in finance, accounting, or business? I've looked at all the requirements myself but i was really confused, what with all the different maths available. I took data management U and Advanced Functions U in grade 12, I got under 79 for both.

It doesn't look like any math is required for those minors, however both the business and finance minors state that math 1M03 is strongly recommended for commerce 2FA3/3FA3, both of which can be used towards those minors but aren't required.

There might be other courses that require math, but nothing else is listed in the program notes.

You can check out the courses here:

minor in accounting: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1194.html
minor in business: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1192.html
minor in finance: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1193.html

Business: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1192.html

No Math courses required.

Finance: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1193.html

No Math courses required.

Accounting: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1194.html

No Math courses required.

For Finance and Accounting there is an analysis course which looks like statistics.

I don't understand why you're taking Enviro Sci...all your other courses seem to be from soc sci except for that. Whats the reasoning there?

Maybe you should take more courses that you're interested in like History, mmedia, etc. Lots to choose from, just gotta wait till they are avail.
