Anthro!
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if there are any upper year anthro students on here seeing as I have some questions. H'ok, so here is my story: I am enrolled in the fine arts program, and I want to do a combined honours in anthro. I am enrolled in the 1A03 program, but the 1B03 is full, and I'm not sure if the 1Z03 is too sciencey for me. I know there are four strands, and if it is possible for me to do my combined honours I want to go into the cultural anthro. Also, are there any science intensive courses required? If so I may be screwed seeing as I only did the required amount back in highschool...

Here I am! W00t! I'm double majoring in Cultural Studies and Anthropology; with a preferance towards the cultural side.

Sadly, MAC doesn't offer a linguistics strand (well, technically? I'm pretty sure it's only offered through linguistics though...). So, you are indeed stuck with 1Z03 if you can't get into 1B03 (is it term 2?)

1Z03 isn't too science-y, no. There is some stuff you would have recalled from grade 9 and 10 bio, but nothing all that complex. There is a lot of memorization work required to do well on the midterm/final, however (all the hominids, and their similar names...as well as taxonomic order!!). Did you take the intro to psych/soc/anthro in grade 11? If so, you will be in VERY good shape for this class (or at least I found I was).

And no, there is no sciences you would require, unless you wanted to go into a physical stream; where they reconmend bio and whatnot for anatomical/dating purposes.

Did that help at all?

ahh, thanks alot that did help, yeah i guess i'm stuck with 1Z03, its offered second term. My school never offered psych or anthro because I went to catholic school, but I did take sociology in grade 12...but it was all like families, marriage, cohabitation etc. I emailed the department seeing if they could open a spot, my roommate needed to get into CSMT but it was full and she called them and they gave her a spot so hopefully the same will happen for me. If not I'll just take the Z03 and hopefully I'll get by.

Well, I hope you get into 1B03 if that's what you would prefer.

I think I took a similar course out of family studies; the anatomy of the family unit or some stupid thing (i hated that class and it's rules with a passion and a half).

I suppose it depends on what you said to the department; generally they only open spots (or so I understand) if you require a course for your major. Otherwise, you're sort of stuck with whatever you can frantically grab.

so it's one hour only that conflicts?

and you can always take either 1b03 or 1z03 this summer (they usually offer 2/3 anthros as they're required) or in your second year.

you took no grade 12 math at all? what grade 11 math did you take?

i found it fairly easy, but i took calc and data management in highschool. generally most people find it fair, if not easy. if you are struggling though, you can get a tutor if you need it.

I think you will do well. If it's the same prof that I had, he lays everything out in a really straight forward, non-math talky way.

There are tutorials (not mandatory) as well.
