Apply to general Eng or Eng+ Co-op
Hey Guys,

My sister is applying to Engineering at Mac and wanted to know if there are less spots open in the engineering co-op stream versus the general engineering stream?

Which program is easier to get into? Do they look for a higher average in the co-op stream? If she applies to general engineering can she transfer into the co-op program after first year?

Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for joining MacInsiders. I wasn't in Engineering, but as far as I am aware there isn't different admission levels for coop, as long as you get accepted into Engineering.

If you want to apply early your sister can add it on through OUAC. Or you can add it on later once you're at McMaster right up until your final year of studies. It's flexible.

If your sister is going into B.Tech then it's already added in.

See this page for details about coop for prospective students:

What Chad has said is correct. You can add the co-op option for Engineering at any time after taking a pass/fail course called Eng 1EE0 I believe. You'll have to pay an additional amount in your supplemental fees each year for being registered as a co-op student, but that's about it.

No difference. I changed to the co-op program in my 3rd year when I wanted to apply for internships.

Similarly, if you are enrolled in co-op and don't end up getting any co-op work, it won't stop you from graduating with the degree (less co-op designation).

it doesnt matter what she puts in high school. its an option that needs to be explained to students since even in science they ask you for a specialization and many students get stressed for no reason about what to put

It actually might be better not to enroll in co-op immediately. Statistically speaking, she probably won't get a job after first year, and the odds aren't much better after second. That being said, co-op fees ($100/year) are paid upon registration of the co-op program regardless whether or not you use their services, so unless she's extremely confident in her ability to get three 4-month summer internships over her four years at Mac, there's no reason to be in co-op right away.
