Wow, analyzing 300 data points?!? Sounds interesting and scary at the same time lol
I'm taking this course in first term, and I can't wait! I LOVE astronomy!

Haha, some say interesting, more say stressful. >.< But don't procrastinate, especially if you have little to no experience with Excel, and it'll all workout.

After days of checking SOLAR I finally got into this class the night before SOLAR closed. =D
What does this project involve? Excel/spreadsheets are no problem to me but I'm wondering what this project is all about. Hmm..

Wow that was lucky!
As long as it's not changed, the project has to do with the orbital periods of Jupitor's four moons.
Basically, throughout the entire semester, students are assigned a night where we go out and plot Jupitor and it's four visible moons on a paper using a telescope. The point of this to determine the distances of the moons from Jupitor's centre, in terms of Jupitor's radius.
We then collect all of our data and put it on the Astron 1F03 wiki. Then our individual work starts. We take all that data (say 100 kids in the class, about 3-4 moons each so at least 300 data points) and put it in spreadsheet in Excel.
Now here is the problem solving part. We have to figure out a way to organize the data so we can plot the graphs of the moon's orbits. The point of the project is to determine which moon is which (ex. Moon1 could be Ganymede) using the graphs and orbital periods.

If you go to DR. REID he will explain how to use a spreadsheet, which is one of the methods to do the project. Nice guy, he explained me how to use it.
If you need a textbook for next year for this course, talk to me about it.

I'm pretty good with Excel, I've used it a lot in high school. Thanks for the tip though, I'll be sure not to procrastinate (if that's possible!) lol
