Athabasca courses easiness?
I would like to take math 2z02 and 2zz3 this summer and thought Athabasca would be a better option. So after reading the Athabasca threads here on Macinsiders I noticed that none of them mentioned the easiness. It seems as if the course ends up actually costing around 1000 dollars and a lot of hassle with setting up invigilators and such, but I was wondering if the course is easier in difficulty than the one you would take at Mac?

Basically, in terms of the way questions are asked and graded...is it much easier? I like teaching myself and don't really need TAs/profs to explain things to me so that won't make much of a difference to me.

Thanks a lot for any help!

I took a Philosophy course at Athasbasca during one summer, to lighten my workload, so I can't really comment whether math is easier/harder. If I remember correctly, the course does cost a bit more than taking one at Mac, since we are out-of-province students. However, it wasn't substantial...otherwi se I wouldn't have taken it.

In terms of easiness, I would probably rate Athabasca as being the same or slightly easier. For that particular course, I only was in contact with the TA...and she did all the marking.

As the course was individualized-study (no lectures/videos, etc.), there was alot more reading than I had expected. Luckily, they give you more than the regular 4-months to complete the course (I think it's like 6-months or something).

Also, what made things easier was that they let you choose the pace/speed of the course. So there's no particular deadlines, and you could literally just hand-in all the assignments and write the exam in the last month. I'm not sure if the math course is setup the same way.

The course itself is actually cheaper than McMaster's tuition (~450 compares to ~525) but you have to also pay for supplementary fees which bring it up to ~750$. But that's only like 100$ more expensive when you include our supplementary fees to the 525 we are paying.

Also note that if it's your first time taking a course you have to pay an extra 115$ for registration.
