When one misses a lecture, they send a mass email out to everybody in the class.
When i tried to do this, it said "no contacts to display." I tried clicking the option "section" and "default section" and still no contacts showed.
What am I doing wrong?

THAT is the problem. Sending a mass email isn't the normal or appropriate thing to do.

Try talking to the people sitting next to you in class, meet people, make friends, ask for notes.
