Award reception?
Hey
I recently got an e-mail and a letter from the school, inviting me to a reception for the McMaster Presidents Entrance Award and Provost Honour Roll recipients and an awards ceremony. I've asked all of my friends and none of them were invited, so I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there who's going? Also, if anyone has gone, what's it like?
PS. I found a thread similar to this one, but its a couple years old and was only about the reception, so I started a new thread. Sorry if i should've just used the old one. :p

We'll I'm not sure who hosts these specific ceremonies, but depending on who it is, you could get a certificate, meet some cool people, have a fancy dinner, or at the very least, get some refreshments to snack on. Honour Roll is a pretty big deal though, and wouldnt advise skipping that if you happen to get it. This sounds like you got the presidents award, which a lot of people get

Yeah, I'm a first year so it's just for highschool grades (not honour roll), is it important to go then since its not even really for university?

It's a good thing to go to. I've been going to the engineering one since I first entered McMaster. Very formal, nice dress and all, but the conversations are great, especially if you get to talk to your scholarship donor. The awards ceremony tends to be a little long for my liking, but they will say nice things about you which is always good to hear . You get a program with all the awards winners and you will get presented a certificate for your award. Then the reception afterwards is an additional chance to talk to award donors and such. Good information. My first year I got offered a summer job and got handed a business card. You should go for sure. Don't pass up this great opportunity to meet some great people and get good information on future careers and such.
Good Luck!

If you're coming in from highschool, it's because your Top 6 average was 95+
I went last year and it was a great way to network and meet profs. I would recommend going.

Okay, so the consensus seems to be that its a good thing to go to for networking, and since the profs keep telling us how important that is, I guess I'll go. Thanks for the input everyone
