Earthbound was unlike everything I've ever played, but I couldn't really get attached to the characters since they didn't have much backstory.
Mother 3's characters (or at least the ones in Lucas' family) were built from the ground up and it was really cool to see them change as the game went on. It also dealt with some surprisingly mature themes (Tanetane Island: need I say more?) and the whole experience got me so attached to the characters it'd probably sound ridiculous to even try to explain the full extent of it, especially since the only visual representation provided was a handful 2D sprites.
I'm a huge sucker for a good story in a game though, so that's probably why I enjoyed it so much. It wasn't a perfect game, but definitely an experience that's going to be hard to match.
