What do you guys do when you need to stay focussed on a certain task or subject for a prolonged period of time and you find yourself getting tired (mentally, more than physically) and stuff?

I can tell you after spending multiple 20 hour marathons in the GIS lab that one of the best ways to maintain focus is to take breaks. Go for a short walk, watch a video on the internet, whatever.

Yea GIS lab! Hi Ben!

Use study buddies that you known will keep you on task and keep your spirits up. And yea, walks definately work...helps to clear your head when you are getting too bogged down.

I find jumping around to different sections of the subject helps too. Keeps your brain fresh...it gets boring focusing on the same thing forever...

Ironically for me, the exact opposite is true:

Having people around to work with me often times just distracts me. I prefer solitude...surrounded by others who are working hard but not interacting with me.

So I guess what this means is, no one can give you a solid answer...it varies from person to person and possibly from discipline to discipline...you'll have to try things out for yourself and see what works!

I agree with Mowicz. If I have friends around me, I usually end up talking more than studying. But I guess it just differs from person to person.

When I am trying to stay focused, I always turn on all the lights in my room. More light helps me stay alert and it keeps me from falling asleep. I also take little breaks after finishing a set amount of work (i.e., I take a break after studying 5 lectures). I find it better to take breaks after you finish a certain amount of work, rather than take breaks after a certain amount of time. When I am getting tired or unfocused, I also find it helpful to wash my face with super cold water. The cold definitely clears your mind.

My friend's old roommate says the best way to stay focused is with a drug known as "adderall".

Good effects: Basically 12 all classes

Bad effects: Forget you need to sleep and eat food to stay alive.
