This may be obvious...or not, but did you check out ratemyprofessor.ca?
The opinion of the majority tends to be fairly accurate. Don't be discouraged by one or two bad opinions though. A lot of my favourite profs have had a few bad reviews.
I would also suggest sitting in on the lectures yourself. What might be engaging for one person, may be boring to another.
