Calculating Before Exam Average
how do we calculate our average going into the exam? Since there are different weights for different things.

Thanks

Physicists have been trying to solve this problem for decades now, apparently its far too complex.

Multiply the percent you got by weight/100, and repeat this for all marked items, and find the sum of all of these marks. Leave the exam out. Divide the value you got by the weight of everything except for the exam.

...pretty simple, average * weighting of that section

say I get 90% on labs worth 15% of final

90*.15

or you can go here:

http://pekalicious.com/finalgradecalc/

or if you like excel you can make one as well

EDIT: woops someone got to it before me

You are in university, you should know. If you must, here's an example:

Labs - 20%
Assignments - 10%
Midterm - 20%
Final Exam - 50%

You have done 4 labs, which each lab is equivalent to 5%, whatever percentage you have in that, multiply it by 0.05. Do it for the next 3 labs, add them all up. Lets say you got 18% total in the lab.

You have done 10 assignments which each assignment is worth 1%, whatever percentage you got on your assignment, multiply it by 0.01. Repeat for the next 9, add them up. Say you got 6% overall.

You got 50% on the midterm, that means you got 10% final mark.

Add them all up, you have 34% overall before your final, if you had perfected each one of them, you would have gotten 50%

Now, lets play with the final exam percentage. You know you kept 34%, you need a 50 to pass, so you need only 32% (32*.50) on the exam to pass the course.

Comprende?

Easier way but practically the same thing would be to add up the weights and then go onto avenue if your course has a avenue page and add up the fraction marks and then multiply.

so lets say you got 2 midterms worth 25% ea and final is 50%.

midterm 1 - 12/25
midterm 2 - 25/25

add those up and divide and get 37/50 which is 74% and then take 74 and multiply by .5 :p

obvi if its only 2 marks to calculate the speed would be the same to do it individually. but im talking about like if you have lots of breakdown of marks.

e.g. something worth 5%, 10%, then 15%, 40%, and so on.

using website is slower cuz you would have to find the total fractional grade for your entire course so lets say 145/200 find answer and then enter it onto the website. and then find your weight atm and enter it onto website. i wuda just use calc and found 145/200 and then multiply immediately by weight using the fast ANS feature which lets you use ur answer and compute something with it.

I've never really understood what's so hard about this, I've been doing it since grade 8, it always baffles me when I see these threads.

exactly, actually this began in gr 7, when you start getting percentage grades. i guess lots of people aren't that good at math, there is an argument going on in some other thread about whether 48 ÷ 2(9+3) is 2 or 288. clearly its 288, if you followed bedmas. im smh at all these people.

It's more like, I'll be in math class doing integrals or whatever, and then I'll hear some kid asking how to calculate their grade if tests are 60% and the exam is 40%. So you can do fine in calculus, but don't understand simple percents. I'm actually confused sometimes by people :(

You can use my template if you have any prior excel skillz.

Note: I like to put in my guesses for exams (anything in red = guess).
I put the mark going INTO the exam beside the final mark (for example, cell B9 is current mark).

Lemme know if you have any questions of how I set things up, but I didn't really use any advanced formulas...

If you give me all of your grade weightings, grades, birthdate and credit card number, I can calculate it for you.

Otherwise, here's this:

Thanks a lot. That confirms my calculations. xD

Now I'm glad we have the same courses (except where you have Econ, I have Math 1AA3). I'm too lazy right now to make a spreadsheet myself. I haven't had classes since Tuesday, and my first exam is on Friday. x_x;
