Calculating Grade Average
I have a question based on the calculation of the weighted grade averages.
As stated with the example on this site: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...ent/pg145.html , this example shows a calculated average of 8.5.
May be a stupid question, but exactly is the 8.5? Is it an 8 on the the grade point scale? or because its .5, does it become a 9? Or is this number relating to a percentage?
Thanks for the help!

If your average is an 8.5, it's just that - an 8.5. It doesn't get bumped up to a 9 or lowered to an 8. It's just relating to your exact percentage. This way, you have a more precise measure of your average than if it were just raised or lowered to the closest whole number. This is important for determining your academic standing and if you're qualified to gain entry into programs.
Hope that helps!

can someone please explain how you would calculate the overall mark you have in a class (including weighing of things)? So far I've been adding up all my marks and dividing by the total but I think it's inefficient since every assignment, etc. weighs differently and so effects my mark differently too.
thank you in advance!!

here's an example:
Midterm 1
-worth 20%
-mark: 85%
-points earned: (.85*20 = 17)
Midterm 2:
-worth 20%
-mark: 90%
-points earned: (0.90*20 = 18)
Assignments:
-worth 15%
-mark: 80%
-points earned: (0.80*15 = 12)
Total so far before exam out of 55% is 17 + 18+ 12 = 47/55 or ~85%
To figure out what you need on the exam to get the mark you want:
(47 + x)/100 = 80/100

How would I calculate my course mark?
I am assuming they could be calculated by converting to the number value... but if so, I end up with a 10.5 in the course, would that be rounded up or down?
11 x .4 = 4.4
11 x .35 = 3.85
9 x .25 = 2.25
= 10.5

pretty sure it won't get rounded up, it will very likely be an A- overall grade, but you should check w/ your TA/prof. i would think the only case it would be an 11 is if you were at a 10.9 or something like that.

For this Fall/Winter session, I took 24 units of classes. In this past summer, I took 6 units. Now, is my sessional average simply the average for the 24 units, or is for the last 30 (ie. Fall/Winter + Spring/Summer)? For instance, when the university is awarding academic scholarships, would they be using my Fall/Winter session or my last 30 units?
I know this type of question has been asked before, but I've been hearing different things. Thanks everyone!

Your cumulative average will be the average for all 30 units (including the summer units). Your sessional average for the summer will include only the 6 units that you took in the summer. I took 9 units during the summer of 2010 and my cumulative average for the fall/winter session of 2010/2011 has been calculated for 39 units (30 units for the fall/winter session + 9 units for the summer). This average should show up on your grade report under the heading:
** Grade Report for session starting May 2010 **
If you take summer courses at Mac, your grade for these courses will always be averaged together with the grades for the courses that you take in the upcoming fall/winter session.
