If people are worried about the mattresses, why don't you get one of those plastic mattress covers? That, plus a mattress pad, plus sheets would REALLY seperate you from the bed.

And they sell the plastic matress covers at every dollar store I've ever been to.

If you still want to bring in a mattress, I would recommend your parents dropping it off a couple of weeks after move in, that is what I did and I never got any hassle throughout the year.

What did you do with the provided mattress though?

A while ago I'd read something regarding bed bugs and mattresses. Bed bugs are a real threat and a great problem with new mattresses that people do not realise is that if your old mattress and new mattress are transported together, they can transfer from one to the other.
I would recommend a mattress pad if you really can't bring in one (though if its new and packaged...) and to change the mattress pad every year.
I would personally inquire if I could bring in a new mattress (maybe even provide proof of purchase) because flipping your mattress every once in a while is quite important for back support etc.

They won't let you bring it into residence. You can't bring your own mattress because it may contain lice/bed bugs and the University doesn't want to risk it since it costs a lot to get rid of them.
