Are academic advisors willing to help you through email or will they only help you personally? I'm kind of a shy guy and going down to drop in hours seems like kind of an unnecessary pain. I think it would be much easier and more productive if I just emailed my advisor.

If you email them, they'll probably want to set up an appointment and meet with you in person. You're going to need to get over being shy
