Canadian Dentistry School Prerequisites
As requested by a few users, here are the required prerequisites for Canadian Dentistry Schools as of 2010. Please consult the admissions site for the most up-to-date information or about the eligibility of specific courses.
University of Alberta:
· 6 credits of general chemistry with lab
· 6 credits of organic chemistry with lab
· 6 credits of general biology with lab
· 6 credits of physics with lab
· 6 credits of English
· 3 credits of statistics
· 3 credits in introductory biochemistry
University of British Columbia:
· 6 credits of first year English
· 6 credits of introductory chemistry with lab
· 6 credits of introductory biology with lab
· 6 credits of organic chemistry with lab
· 3-6 credits in biochemistry, contact the admissions office for acceptable courses
Dalhousie University:
· 6 credits in biology with lab
· 6 credits in general chemistry with lab OR 3 units of an approved bio-organic chemistry
· 6 credits in physics with lab
· 6 credits of organic chemistry with lab
· 12 units of humanities/social sciences
· 6 credits in a writing course
· 3 to 6 credits in each of the following: introductory biochemistry, introductory microbiology, and vertebrate physiology
University of Manitoba:
· 6 credits in introductory chemistry with lab
· 6 credits in organic chemistry with lab
· 6 credits in biochemistry
· 6 credits in physics with lab
· 6 credits in biology with lab
· 6 credits of English, must be offered through the English department
· 6 credits in Humanities/Social Sciences
McGill University:
· 6 credits in introductory biology with lab
· 6 credits in introductory chemistry with lab
· 6 credits in introductory physics with lab
· 3 credits of introductory organic chemistry with lab
University of Saskatchewan:
· 6 credits of introductory biology with lab
· 3 credits of introductory chemistry with lab
· 3 credits of organic chemistry with lab
· 6 credits of physics with lab
· 6 units of social sciences/humanities courses
· 3 credits of molecular biology (can be from biochemistry see here)
· 3 credits of biochemistry, metabolism – see here for acceptable courses
Note: 6 credits in human physiology are recommended.
University of Toronto:
· 6 credits in general biochemistry
· 6 credits in general mammalian physiology
· 12 credits in life Sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, biology, botany, genetics, immunology, microbio, molecular genetics, neuroscience, nutritional sciences, pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, or zoology)
· 6 credits in a humanities or social sciences (art history, classics, anthropology, economics, geography, political sciences, religious studies, sociology)
Schulich School of Dentistry (University of Western Ontario):
· 6 credits in physiology (Bio 3U03 & 3UU3)
· 3 credits of biochemistry
· 3 credits of organic chemistry with lab
· 6 credits in general biology with lab/tutorials
· 6 credits in general chemistry with lab/tutorials
· 6 credits in general physics with lab/tutorials
Note: 3 credits is usually equal to a semester course (e.g. Bio 1A03). Two 3 credit courses are added up to make-up 6 units (e.g. Chem 1A03 & Chem 1AA3) or you can take a full-year course (e.g. Soc Sci 1A06).
