Well, they might give you an annual rate for the 12 month period, but there's nothing stopping you from calling them up after 4 months and removing your name from the policy. Be aware that when you do this, you will NOT be able to drive your parents' cars, period, until you re-add your name onto the policy again. At this point your parents will likely have to sign papers agreeing that they will not allow you to drive their cars, and that if you do, you will not be covered and potentially be charged for driving without insurance.
Example, if your bill is $1200 for the year, and you pay insurance monthly, call them up after 4 months and take your name off. Boom you've paid only 400 bucks and your name is off. It's not a cell phone contract!
