Car Insurance
Hey guys,

I'm back with my parents for the summer.

I want to drive the car, so I need insurance. For the 8 months that I go back to school I won't be going back home to drive.

The insurance wants to charge me 12 months, whether or not I'm home for 8 months. Is there any way around this?

Cancellation after 4 months? etc.

my ex worked in insurance and 12 mos sounds like BS to me. First of all many people get insurance for only the summer mos on summer vehicles (like campers, etc)... secondly, can you not drive under your parent/s' insurance as a additional driver (assuming it's their car you're driving)?

i'd be hunting around for a better deal for sure!

yeahh just tell them that you can't afford the car or something and they can't hold you to it. also most places that are work together with the MSU have rather lenient cancellation policies when it comes to summer insurance

Well, they might give you an annual rate for the 12 month period, but there's nothing stopping you from calling them up after 4 months and removing your name from the policy. Be aware that when you do this, you will NOT be able to drive your parents' cars, period, until you re-add your name onto the policy again. At this point your parents will likely have to sign papers agreeing that they will not allow you to drive their cars, and that if you do, you will not be covered and potentially be charged for driving without insurance.

Example, if your bill is $1200 for the year, and you pay insurance monthly, call them up after 4 months and take your name off. Boom you've paid only 400 bucks and your name is off. It's not a cell phone contract!

This is all for under my parent's plan.
Apparently they won't let me be excluded because there is a chance I might come back from school and drive the car.

What an unlikely event :S
