Casio Fx991 Es
Dear MacInsiders,

Does anyone know whether we can use the Casio FX-991 ES instead of the Casio FX-991 MS? Thanks very much for the clarification, and I don't want to get a new calculator .

I believe as long as it's a Casio FX-991 then you're fine.

So the professor won't care as long as the model contains Fx-991? because there is a difference between the fx-991 ES and the fx-991 MS PLUS (but neither of them are graphing calculators.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

I think any Casio fx-991 series calculator is all right because...I know this is random, but if you go to mcmaster.ca and you just type in 'Casio fx-991', you'll get a bunch of links to certain courses and they all require "Casio fx-991 calculators". They just mention 'Casio fx-991' so any series should be okay! =)

I don't think any one of the Casio fx-991 calculators is a graphing calculator, so it won't matter.

Have you seen anyone use a Casio that wasn't the one prescribed from the school?

I don't think so...not during tests and stuff at least. I don't think anyone would. They'll just be taken away if the invigilators notice them, then it'll just suck because you won't have a calculator to use for the test/exam.

Do you know where I can ask administration about the type of calculator allowed?

I'm not sure who makes the ultimate decision on that. I can tell you though that there was an old model of the FX-991 (with some other letters after it) which was also allowed before the MS came out, so it's pretty clear that as long as it's an FX-991 it's allowable.

The problem isn't really your profs or TAs who are reasonably bright people and would recognize that a different calculator wouldn't necessarily give you an advantage, it's the invigilators on the exams who aren't necessarily staff (many are just community members) and who basically just follow the instructions they are given verbatim. They aren't necessarily educated enough to recognize anything other than the official calculator as being allowable (and I don't mean that as an insult, but someone who went to school 30-40 years ago just may not recognize the capabilities of something different, so they defer to exactly what's printed on their instructions).

Getting it at Canadian Tire is good ($20). Just make sure the location you're going to has some fx-991's in stock.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Wal-Mart for this particular purchase...it's actually $27 there so you'd be spending more than you would if you bought the calculator from Titles ($24). ^^

You may also be able to find some at the Security Services auction this Wednesday; people lose them all the time...
