Cell Phones
I am entering the final months of my contract with Telus that I signed last year, and was wondering what the alternatives are. Personally, Telus's service and prices were terrible IMO. I am considering either Koodo, Solo or even Virgin Mobile. Can anyone tell me how the service is for those providers.

Just so you know since you were unimpressed with Telus that Koodoo is owned by Telus.

Also Solo is owned by Bell and Fido is owned by Rogers.

What about Wind mobile? They just started up, but I have heard a few rumours that they're pretty good.

I'm not sure if they are available in Hamilton yet though: I've only seen stores in Toronto and Mississauga.

I would give wind mobile a shot as the first month is free and no contracts.. so there is nothing to loose.

Just looked into Wind....they only have 4 phones, and all of them are overpriced IMO. only one is less than $150, plus their plans aren't anything special...ie Koodo, Solo and Virgin have similar plans, but cheaper and larger selection of phones

Those are the actual costs of the phone. Remember, one you buy the phone, it's yours and you're not tethered down for 2-3 years.

I'm gonna wait until they get a smartphone and more coverage in Hamilton/Niagara.

EDIT: I forgot, they have the BB Bold. A good phone. So maybe just more coverage.

Thing that people on contracts have to realize: The $150-$200 phone is on par with average cost when you aren't tethered to that phone company and that price plan for 2-3 years... I have never, and will never personally pay for a plan, as long as my personal use does not absolutly require it because I can't say for absolute certainty that I will have the same usage habits for the next 36 months... There are times when a phone is needed, times when it isn't.

the other hting about Wind mobile is that they don't have the concept of long distance.... You can call alberta, vancouver, heck, once they get a tower in Iqaluit, call up there for the same price you call the guy sitting next to you in class. So you can look at it as pricing that is around the monthly cost at other providers, or you can look at it as "One price, that's it... No more fees on top of that"

Ya, I'm seriously looking into Virign. I called them yesterday, and aparently they are brining in the iPhone this summer. They already have Blackberies for $50 a month. If they offer the same monthly plan for the iPhone, then I'm sold.

Its true that those are the actual prices, but if I had to pay full price for a phone, then I would much rather go in the retail market and get myself a Nokia phone (eyeing a XpressMusic 5800 right now).

I don't find the long distance thing too useful to me, unless they decide to include the US in it too. I have a lot of my family (including my parents) living in the states, so I rack up a bit of long distance charges every now and then.

I have heard complaints about Virgin's BB coverage and plans, however I'm not sure by who, or what kind of technophile they are.

I have a Virgin, and I was a little miffed when they more or less forced me into a plan. I'm not sure if I will renew this summer, based in part on my not knowing where I will be.
