Cheap Insurance?
I'm a G2 driver, living on res, and my 2004 V6 Camry would be at home in Mississauga. I'd just be driving it every other weekend, but when I called insurance they gave me ridiculous quites of like $600 a month. Any advice on insurance companies? or which ones possibly offer student packages for people like me ?

Long story short: no.

Since you're a G2 driver, and it'll be insured with you as the primary driver, it'll cost you a couple thousand a year.
If you were to get insured as an occasional driver with somebody else as the primary driver, they'll pay a couple thousand, while you'll only be a few hundred a year

I am the owner and primary driver of my 2000 Impala and pay $185 per month (without collision). That quote is absurd, call some other insurance companies and get quotes, there is no need for collision on a vehicle that old if you are including that in the estimates.... I think I am with state farm if you were wondering. Do you have any tickets?

just curious how were you driving your camry before, or is the car a recent acquisition?

I would see if you can get insurance through "the personal". I had a 1997 saturn and my insurance was $100 a month when i had my G2 and $50 once i got my G. My insurance was the basic.. i didnt get any add on's but it was in my name.

i tried, but isn't the personal only if the place you work is part of their group ?

I see you're in B.Tech, if you sign up as an IEEE student member (~$60 / year and you get a magazine subscription) then you can get insurance through the IEEE "the personal" insurance plan. For myself, its about 20% cheaper than the cheapest insurance available through my broker and about 7% cheaper than insurance through CAA.

The difference in price is primarily due to broker commissions, the personal and CAA are both direct insurers, so there's no broker and thus no commission. Of course this also means you don't have the benefit of a broker if you need to file a claim.

As with the other insurance threads, take all of the company recommendations here and call many, many, many other places. There are sooooo many variables to take into account: where one company might rape you, another will cut a deal when it comes to things like driver age, vehicle, or area you live in. The only way to find out is to get a real quote. You gotta do your homework if you wanna save.

PS: It's a 2004 Camry. Don't skimp on the collision and comprehensive coverage or you will be SOL if something happens to it.

I'm sitting at about 250/month for a 95 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi Supercharged, living in the Toronto city limits (read: $$), liability only, age 22 and G, 1 ticket under my belt.
