Choosing an Engineering Stream
Hi guys I'm having a bit of trouble of choosing an engineering stream. So far I've got it down to E&B, Mechanical and Software. All of these programs I'm interested in but I'm unable to choose between them. Could you upper years help me with my decision by stating the best of your chosen fields?
Also some specific questions:
1) For E&B is it a lot like physics 1EO3, because this course sucks.
2) My dad says I won't get a job from going into Software engineering because he says the employers want a Comp.Sci degree not B.eng. So what are the job opportunities for Soft. Eng's from McMaster in Canada?
-Thank you for answering

Well I'm certainly not in engineering but my boyfriend is in Software and Embedded so I can tell you a few things:
1. He had a job interview with stats canada for a programming job (with potential to work up obviously). That's just one example, there are many jobs you can do with software. I don't know much about the difference b/w comp sci and software but I would think a B. eng would be preferred? but i can't say much more about that...
2. If things are still the same, you only need to indicate your program choices, and if i recall correctly, don't you get 3-4 choices? Then if you are eligible for all you have the option to choose the one that you want when it comes time. So what i'm saying is if you put for ex. software as your first choice that doesn't mean you are automatically eliminated from being accepted into the 2nd/3rd choice programs. So its good that you're thinking about it now but don't stress too much about it b/c you can make this decision later on as well. (you should verify this fact though)

This isn't true. If you get accepted to your first choice, that is the only one you are eligible for. If you don't meet the requirements for it, then they evaluate your second choice. If you get that, then you are ineligible for your 1st (obviously) and 3rd choices.
Also, with respect to Elec and BioMed, it is really NOTHING like Phys 1E03. The most comparable thing in 1E03 is the 1 week you spend talking about Kirchoff's Laws. TBH, I hated 1E03, but absolutely love Elec and BioMed.

WOAH WOAH WOAH is this true for science as well or is it engineer-only.

Thats how it all is.. if they reserved slots in every choice you made, and tons of people decided to choose one stream and not the other, there would be overcrowding. If your faculty is naturally lacking in students, you might be 'accepted' to more than one, but this seems unlikely

I don't know that it's actually like that for all faculties. I was listed as "eligible" for all of mine, and I think I had to go choose which one I was taking... maybe it automatically put me into my first choice, but I don't think so...
Can anyone in Science remember what they did?

E&B = elec & bio = biomed? If so, no, you only take 2 courses that are like 1E03 - 2FH3 and 3FK4 which is electromagnetics I and II. there is alot of circuit, software, and chem/bio courses too

Can you tell me more of the courses E&B take.
What about the types of courses Soft.Eng take?

Thats not the case. You will only be put into whatever program you have ranked first that you qualify into based on marks. If you have free choice, then you will go into whatever program you ranked 1st unless it is Biomed, Chem and Bio, Management, or Society - for these programs your marks are taken into consideration.

How do you know if you got a free choice?

You would've been told that information in your acceptance letter. Free choice is offered to those that had a really high entrance average. In my year it was 93%+ or something like that.

Why 1e03 hate? I luved that course. You only ever really encounter anything like that in electrostatics, but by then you've got a good foundation to do decently in it...
You seem to want to do software, I'd stick with that, e&b mech and software are not even really related. Theres always a need for software engineers, so I'd say job prospects are good.
