Classics 3MB3
In the Fall of 2008 this class was taught by Alexandra Holbrook. Prof Holbrook is a very competent teacher, she fulfills the three E's: Engaging, Easy to understand and Entertaining! She's also a fair marker.
It is my understanding that this course is a topic course and will change every year, in 2008 it was The Roman Family. The course covered Roman marriage, children in the Roman family, property and inheritance, slaves of the household, the family in material culture, old age and death, adoption and foundlings in the Roman family, and the effects of Christianity on the Roman family. As with most classics classes, there were two textbooks: one being a sourcebook of inscriptions, epitaphs and letters, the other being written by a Classicist.
Class breakdown:
First response paper (due beginning of class Sept. 22, no extensions): 5%
Second response paper (beginning of class October 6, no extensions): 5%
Mid-term test (October 20): 25%
Collaborative project with University of Texas Pan-Am (Nov. 3): 5%
Essay (due November 21; no extensions) –OR-- class presentation: 30%
Final exam (scheduled by the Registrar) 30%
I would highly suggest taking this course if this topic comes up again or simply if Holbrook is teaching it or any other class for that matter.

Fall 2008 Course
Prof. Holbrook is simply phenomenal. She's clear, fair and extremely bright. If you like classes on ancient Rome this is one to take. The material is easy to understand if you have a suitable background in classical studies (particularly Rome of course)
Five out of Five on this one
