Clinical Placement + Criminal Record = Possible disaster??
I am a first year Med Rad student and I have been doing some research and it turns out there is a background check before clinical placements or I could be wrong? I have a criminal record, does anyone know how this will effect my ability to finish my program. It was a DUI....

Essentially what a criminal record check is for is to see if there is anything that will affect your competency to practice whatever field you're going into. If you are doing a vulnerable sector check that means a more in depth check and it will determine your ability to work with "vulnerable" populations such as children and the aging. I think it will be up to the discrepancy of the agency where you do your placement and McMaster if you are able to complete a placement.

I'm doing a placement in geriatrics, they would not let me start until I submitted a vulnerable sector check.

It would depend on where you're doing your placement. I don't think it would affect you too much, but it may raise a red flag and/or you may be asked about it.

Just be up-front about it... unless you're driving a truck, and you demonstrate you're responsiblity, it shouldn't matter.

I think if we let the trash of society obtain free post-secondary education, then you should be good. At least you're paying for it.

If it makes you feel better, I'd choose you over a convict.

You guys are completely right but now I have to put my past behind me and learn from the mistakes I have made to make better of myself and my situation! That one mistake I made is totally completely horribly selfish and inconsiderate but I will not let it ruin the rest of my life.

It's good that you realize your mistakes and that's the most important thing. I wish you the best of luck in your placement.

Better late than never. It shouldn't affect you much but they might ask you (like some other people have said).
