I mean,
I'm waiting for my friend to get her acceptance atm so that we can live together
but the thing is, if it's first come first serve, then wouldn't my chance to get my first preference lessen since those that hand it in earlier are already filling up the spots?

So long as you've filled out the residence form/sent the deposit by the deadline, you're in no way disadvantaged compared to people who accepted their offer and sent in their deposit in, say, February. When you send in your residence deposit, they don't assign your room upon receiving it - that would be unfair to students who were still waiting to hear back. They wait until after the deadline and then the residence lottery starts. If you don't fill it out until after that, then your chances of receiving your preferred room will decrease a fair bit.

As long as your friend has her acceptance and pays the deposit/completes the residence forms by the deadline, you're perfectly fine.
