course load
Hi,

Will taking 5 courses in one semester and 4 courses in the other affect anything in the long run? (i.e. medical school, any professional schools, etc). Will the fact that I have 4 courses negatively affect me?

Thanks!

It depends on what you're looking into and how **** they are about looking at your records.. I don't think the transcript you'll have at the end of school splits up your course records into years/semesters, but it would be good to have an adequate explanation if you were asked about it in a professional school interview.

Doing alright with maxed courses > doing good with less than maxed courses

Professional schools and future employers tend to look more for people who can manage time well, while being a decent student opposed to appearing as braniac in terms of GPA

Your transcript does break it down into terms (so fall/winter is one term, summer is another, etc).

And yes, taking a reduced courseload (ie, less than 30 units over the fall/winter term) can negatively affect admissions to many professional schools. Some require you to do well with a full courseload at least once, while others apply special weightings that allow students who have taken a full courseload every term to drop several courses (ex, UofT med school), while students who have taken a reduced courseload even once cannot drop any courses from their calculated GPA. It's best to look at exactly what you want to do and see if it will affect you/to what extent, since it varies so much.
