Temara, the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist is that you go to the latter for "orthodontic appliances"; i.e., braces and the like. A dentist doesn't actually make adjustments to your teeth, whereas an orthodontist can. It's a specialty of dentistry, so dentists go on for additional schooling to be one.
As for orthodontists in Hamilton - I, too, have heard very good things about Dr. Popovic. The only issue may be that he's all the way on the other side of the city, in Stoney Creek. A bus would definitely go by there, though. My old orthodontist here in Hamilton retired, which is probably a good thing...he was kind of a crusty old guy. Apparently brilliant, though - my dentist told me that he developed one of the brace designs that is very commonly used now, and was an active researcher up until he retired. I have a feeling such credentials were lost on me when I was a 13-year old brat who didn't want to wear his elastics :p
