Use of Dental Plan?
I'm a first year student and I'm just
wondering how you guys used
your dental plan?

What kind of services can you get?
What services are usually used?
Are there any "strings" attached to
this dental plan?

Thanks alot!!!! =)

The MSU has a pretty good list of what is covered http://www.msumcmaster.ca/faqs/overview.htm

I've never used mine so I couldn't tell you about the strings, but all the information should be available on the MSU site.

I use it for the normal check up. I have had to pay up front and received a refund a couple weeks later, but that is possibly because I get it done in Alberta instead of Ontario. Just remember to bring in the form and they should be able to process it at the office for you.

I'm a little confused on how it works. So they fully cover a check up. But what about if you need to go back? is that also covered or is it like a one time thing ?

I used mine last year and was extremely happy about it.

Basically, things like X-rays, cleanings, examinations, are 100% covered. Other things like fillings or other repairs are 75% covered. All of details about how much is covered can be found here.

Another thing is that you have up to a certain dollar amount that is covered. This means that all of the aformentioned procedures are covered until the total amount you spend is $750. So, If I get $755 worth of x-rays, I'm going to have to pay for the extra $5.

The MSU also has what is labelled as 'online dentists.' I had no idea what this meant but when I had called one of these guys on the phone, they seemed to be a lot more helpful when it came to our dental plans than any other random dentist. The reason is because when you go to one of those online dentists, you don't have to pay upfront, keep your receipt, go and get the dental plan reimbursement form, and then wait to get reimbursed later on. You can just go in, have whatever you need done and that's that! =)

Pretty sure the dentist on main whitens your teeth free of charge too if you go in for a cleaning. So that's a nice plus!

Haha, I'm in love with the dental plan. I'm actually kind of happy that I got my first cavity this late in life, since I got a huge discount for it. 75% I believe. I only paid 45 dollars right there and then. I showed them (the dental receptionist) the actual pamphlet and my student card, and they took care of the rest.

It's pretty sweet so, take advantage of it if you need it. What are the rates like at the new dentist on campus is what I'm wondering...

I took out all 4 of my wisdom teeth december last year.

They only covered 2 wisdom teeth, IIRC. But I got over 400 bucks back on a $1100-something bill. =/

At least the insurance company wasn't cheap. they reimbursed me on the two teeth that cost more to remove.
