It would be much easier for me to do this if I actually had some sort of a/v or even a bloody overhead in the classrooms I teach in.
I guess I'll be doing a lot of writing on the board...hmm.

Could you post a note online for them, and go over it in class? A handout would work as well. It would probably be easier for you and them

I had amazing English teachers from grade 7 up. Also, my English teacher for grades 11 and 12 was a graduate from Mac and had only been out of school for a couple of years, so not only did she know how to write a proper essay, but she also knew what things specific profs at Mac look for. It's actually really helpful in that respect. I facebook her all the time. haha She taught me how to write a solid essay. However, my English lit. teacher was much more laid back in the way that we could write as many paragraphs as we wanted as long as we proved our point. He was helpful because he had almost the opposite personality as my other teacher. Then (not essay related) I had a teacher for World Issues who was also a fresh Mac grad (most of my teachers were young-ish and McMaster students [I lucked out there]) who gave a class like a lecture. It was near the end of senior year and he just talked for an hour. Everyone was so shocked; we thought he was kidding. We didn't think that profs would never provide notes or power points for us to copy. I was really prepared for Mac because I had such GREAT teachers who were mostly MCMASTER STUDENTS.

Yup, I'm probably going to email them something, as Carleton still uses WebCT and I can't post something for JUST my students.
Also, mice at your window are scary.

Goodluck with your class! Let me know how it goes, I'm actually curious to see how beneficial explaining how to write an essay is... I'm awaiting a mark for my "better" essay, so hopefully it works out better than the previous one... I'm always surprised at how many students consider themselves as "good essay writers" and have that blow up in their face.
I wish highschool/college/uni actually had an essay writing course that scrapped everything we previously knew and taught us the "proper" way to write :(

I'm contemplating doing my PhD in educational theory (not related to a B.Ed, in that you technically aren't qualified to teach), so this is something good to know! Also something I agree with...
