Do I need a Laptop?
Hi,

I will be going into humanities 1 in september, specifically i am interested in the multimedia program. I am into 3D modeling, graphic work and some video editing with premiere.

I currently have a decent desktop, its a quad-core, 4gb ram, gtx 460, 1tb hard drive. I am wondering if I will really need a laptop for first year university and also later on in my multimedia program. I wont be doing residence, i live in Hamilton. Also for multimedia courses, do i need a laptop or is a computer provided in class?

If I do, what do you guys suggest i should get, do I need anything expensive or will $550 or lower suffice for a laptop?

I know this was posted a lot of times here, just have some differences, in my situaition, and I would like to know what people think now, as opposed to 3 year old threads with higher budgets mentioned...

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Since you already have a decent desktop - I'd suggest getting a netbook or something similar in form factor. You're likely going to want to have access to a computer for notes and for checking course updates during the day.

I have the Lenovo x120e. It's pretty cheap, has the form factor of a netbook, but is a lot more powerful and doesn't run slow as hell like a lot of netbooks do.

Might be worth checking out.

thanks for the reply, was thinking of that option, another thing i can add also is that the desktop is mine and my brothers, I mostly go on it anyways. Also I posted this in the wrong forum, its not really a student deal :d. If a moderator can please merge (or deleate this) thread with: http://www.macinsiders.com/showthrea...6#p ost273666

I am going into second year Multimedia. You do not need a laptop as all multimedia classes take place in computer labs, fully equipped with powerful PCs that have Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver and many other things.

thanks for the reply so theres no point of buying a laptop what about fr notetaking and doing my work at uni since i have some 3 hr breaks

also what do you think about the acer i3, 4gb ram for 380 at futureshop? or should i wait till boxing day that way i can see if i do need a laptop and i should also be able to get a better deal?

Also I would need a big sized flash drive or hard drive then right? Since you said that the multimedia classes are in the computer lab.
