I hated it; i'm an engineer though.
Essay on short story of a small selection, and essay on poem. Exam was pretty fair, but you had to match names of authors with segments of texts and basically write a short essay at the end. It wasn't that heavy of a course though, so if i had chosen geo or psych or some language i would have done a lot worse in my other courses...

i took it 2 years ago (with dr. kehler)
it was an okay course.
two nitpicky essays on short works, and a fairly easy multiple choice/short answer/essay exam.
if there are any other english classes available out there i'd suggest taking them, but class isn't awful.
kehler was nitpicky about little things, and even as an english major i only managed a C+ in the course....don't take the class to boost your average! haha
also, i have the custom courseware still (circa 2 years ago) if you're interested.

Average mark for a first year English is around a C+; it's usually the same for all English courses in all years, actually.
However, not so sure if it's the same spread in seminars, however.

if you can try to take english 1aa3 (longer genres), it's a lot more reading but ppl who have taken both tend to like that one better (and do slightly better)

I took it last year with Dr. Pollock in second term and didn't think that it was too bad. The readings were short with the exception of some essays that were longer. I wasn't really used to thinking in abstract terms, so I thought that the essays were a little challenging. However, I got some advice on that after talking to the writing TA and it was quite helpful.
The exam was pretty long and consisted of MC, short answers, and an essay question if I remember correctly.

Poetry generally is boring. A lot of English majors don't like it (me included).
Pfft. There are fun English/CSCT classes out there (that don't have poetry, to boot).

Sorry, force of habit. Cultural Studies and Critical Theory. Some English courses (1B03, 1BB3, 2A03, 2J03, 2M03, 2MM3, 3R06, 3Y03, 3YY3, 3X03, 3W03, others) are cross-listed with CSCT because they have a cultural focus.
