English 1A03
I'm thinking about taking this course this fall and I want to know how difficult it is. Does it involve a lot of written work? I'm an international student and my English isn't as good as the average Canadian's.

University level English can be tough even for those born in Canada. But if you go into TA office hours and go in for all the extra workshops and tutorials on writing English essays you will be able to be successful. You may have to put in a little more effort than someone born in Canada, but you can still get a 9 to 11.

If you do end up taking this course , don't fall behind in the reading , though that goes for all course really : ) I personally really enjoyed this course though I feel like I didn't learn anything , but then again I'm an English major so

I took it last year with Dr. Donaldson. Throughout the term, we had to write two essays: one about any poem we have studied, and another on any short story we've read. The exam consists of writing two compare and contrast essays utilizing the themes and related readings throughout the course in TWO hours. We were given a list of potential exam questions beforehand, so if you prepare your points ahead of time, the exam shouldn't be too difficult, though I'm sure most people's hands were all sore after the exam

From my experience, it depends completely on which TA you get. Some are perfectly happy to give 12's, while others feel that A's in university English are unattainable. Completely luck of the draw, unfortunately...:furi ous:

Realistically...a 12 is near impossible. 9s 10s and 11s are usually what people get.

Nah I don't think so, I got a 12 in this class and I'm not really good at English (or any humanities courses for that matter).

That being said, the essays were definitely tough and you had to put in some time and effort to do as well as possible.

My biggest suggestion would be to schedule a meeting with your TA before each essay is due, to try to get a better understanding of how to do well, what he/she is looking for, etc.

EDIT: Though I took this course with another prof, that might explain why. It may be harder now than it was a couple years ago to get a 12.

If Zuroski-Jenkins is teaching this class, it's amazing and you should definitely take it! She's one of my favourite profs I've had so far.

That's what I heard and why I decided to take the class. Unfortunately profs changed at the last minute...
