I just got this motion from the updated MSU General Asssembly (17th March) agenda:

Tsang – Solar Car Fee Change

MOVED by Tsang, seconded by _______ that the MSU revert the $1.00 Solar Car fee to Engineers Without Borders.

Can someone from EWB explain the rationale behind potentially having $1.35 per year from students? Not trying to play the devils advocate here but I have to refer to John McIntyre's argument that is EWB really the only cause that everyone is forced to spend that amount of money on? Would it not have been a better idea to have it opt out like OPRIG is?

Can someone clear up a voting question for me?

Is this fee going to be implemented unless enough students vote no?

Or will the fee only be implemented if enough students vote yes?

I hope that makes sense.

Hey Kathy2...in a sense if enough people don't say no it could mean enough people are saying yes. Ultimately it needs to reach quorum (10% of full-time undergraduate student population), which is going to be tough when several faculties were acclaimed and won't be voting for SRA representatives as well. As long as quorum is reached and there are more yes votes than no, then the fee will likely be implemented. I say likely because it needs to be approved by the University Student Fees Committee, but that is normally just a rubber stamp.

Kathy2 says thanks to McIntyre for this post.

Can someone affiliated with Mac Solar Car Project on MacInsiders comment on whether that motion for GA is something they were aware of or something they are okay with interms of budgeting? Or was it a mutal deal between EWB & Solar Car Team?

Hi Huzaifa,
Thanks for bringing this up, and I'm sorry for the late reply.
EWB McMaster has no knowledge of this motion. We did not raise it and have not been in discussion with the McMaster Solar Car Team about student fees.

Hey Huzaifa,

To reiterate what Steph said, this MI posts is the first any of us at EWB are hearing of this GA motion. In fact if the referendum did not meet quorum or "no"was the majority vote we had the intention of submitting our own motion to GA.

So now I too am curious and would like to know when Solar car made this decision since like I said EWB has no idea about this :S

We don't know if it is someone from the Solar Car Team or someone else entirely, but EWB McMaster definitely did not make the motion.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Huzaifa.

I'm from the solar car team exec and I don't know of anyone with the last name Tsang even on the team... definitely wasn't the exec who put the motion through. We haven't discussed this with EWB in any way, and it wouldn't be okay with our budgeting for multiple reasons. I was actually JUST made aware of this thanks to Steph, so now I'm scrambling to figure out what went on.
