I received a bursary too, which I'm grateful for.

But does anyone know how the bursaries are decided? Is it based solely on OSAP?
I'm confused because my boyfriend got almost $3000 and I got less than a third of that, yet we made the same amount of money in the summer, we're in the same year (level 5), we live in the same apartment in Hamilton, etc.
The only difference is he's in Engineering and he receives lots of scholarships.

I don't understand why he got so much more than me, especially since I'm more in need of money than he is ..? Is it simply because he's in Engineering?

(I'm not complaining about getting money. I just don't understand the system for deciding who gets what)

Yeah, I think faculty was a significant factor in deciding bursary amount this year. People in Commerce and Eng, the two most expensive faculties, seem to have gotten the most, if they got anything at all. Makes sense though since our tuition is a few thousand dollars more than other faculties.

I believe his tuition was just barely $1000 more than mine. I wonder how they do the calculations for the bursaries?

Bursaries are donation based, are they not? If more money has been donated to the Eng faculty than to yours, they'll have more to give out to students.

Ooh, okay. I thought all the bursary money went into one big pot, and then it was distributed from there. I didn't know it was separated into faculties like that.

Idk, Im guessing here. I just assume that if I'm making a donation worthy of a bursary, I get to choose where it goes.

I think a lot of it is based on how much OSAP you receive as well. So if you are less than 4 years out of highschool, you'll get much less OSAP (and therefore less bursaries) than someone who has been out of highschool for 4 or more years.

There's a bursary list that shows which bursaries go to which faculty and how they are distributed (ex. some of them say people with high volunteer hours and in commerce/eng/soc sci, etc. will get preference over others who don't have volunteer hours) There are a LOT of different ones.

EDIT found it... http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...ent/pg201.html
