Feeling hot hot hot! July 5 2010

Today is going to be a hot one in the Hammer, ladies and gents!

The Weather Network is reporting today's high will be 32C which will feel like 42C with the humidex. They are calling for thunderstorms this evening, which should make the temperature cooler for tomorrow.

It is very, very easy to get heat stroke with temperatures like this...and heatstroke it NOT fun.

Some ways to beat the heat and stay cool:
  • Stay out of the heat from 11am to 3pm, which is the hottest part of the day. If you MUST be outside, stay in the shade. These are also the times when you are most likely to get a sunburn.
  • Go into places that have air conditioning if you don't have any at home. MUSC has A/C and is open 24/7.
  • Keep hydrated. Drink a lot of fluids, but don't drink ones with caffeine (coffee, colas, energy drinks) which can actually make you more thirsty. Water is best, and if you've been very active get a Gatorade or Powerade.
  • Eat foods with a high water content: fruits (especially melons) and many veggies (cucumber, celery, lettuce) can help keep you hydrated
  • Eat popsicles and freezies!
  • Take a cold bath or shower
  • Run in a sprinkler

I've been aching for a water-fight for quite a few months now...been asking my parents to get me one of those super water-blaster guns.
