Fencing at McMaster
I know there are beginner classes for fencing at McMaster but I was wondering if anyone on this site has taken one? Is it worth it, do you need to buy your own equipment, etc? Any other information would be appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance.

There's also the Westdale Fencing Club, which meets at the Westdale United Church at the corner of King and Sterling:

One of my friend fences in the Westdale club and really enjoys it. He started off as a beginner in first year and wants to continue for his fourth year.

Hey Guys,

I'm on the McMaster Varsity Fencing team. The only thing that you need for the fencing beginner classes is comfortable shoes and pants with no zippers or anything like extra pockets as that can be a danger if anything catches on. The classes run once a week. The classes teach technique, bladework and theory. I am not certain as to the exact cost but it is made with students in mind. After the classes are done you decide whether or not you like to continue with the team and often the coaches can recommend a weapon for you. The coaches are always helpful, friendly and approachable.

I joined the team in my first year after the beginner classes. I am currently going into my third year. I can tell you that this was the best decision I've ever made in term of extra-curricular activities. I can keep going and going and going about how much fun it is but it'd be easier if people contact me instead.

My msn is [email protected] , you can also reach me there by regular email. I'm always willing to talk and get people in it. I take part running the Clubsfest table and I've had multiple people talk to me at the end of the year with thank-yous for getting them into it.

The most important thing is this:

No experience is required. No equipment is required. Come on out to the Clubsfest table and find out more info. We have a demo night where people come in and see fencing demonstrations and talk to the coaches and the team members. It's free for everyone to attend and I've seen students, staff and even faculty members attending these classes. And beyond the fun of the sport you'll also get to meet a lot of people.

Hopefully that answers a few things, but please don't hesitate to email me and please come by the Clubsfest table.

Hope to see you there!!!

KJ
