First Year Courses. amidoinitrite
Hello all! Just got done picking out courses for first year. Going for a Major in Sociology and Minor in Comp Sci. You guys have any advice? What kind of workload am I taking on here? And what were these classes like?

Sociol 1A06
Psych 1X03,1XX3
Math 1X03,1AA3
Comp Sci 1MD3,1FC3
MMedia 1B03
and I need one more 3 unit elective so I was thinking something like Arts&Sci 1C06?

P.S. What are the bed sizes in most dorms? Twin? or "Extra Long"?

Thanks!

To major in Soci you need a 6.0 average and at least a B- in 1A06, so that looks good. I'm pretty sure Arts&Sci courses are only open to students in Arts&Sci, and plus 1C06 is a 6 unit course (last number represents how many units). So you'll need to find another 3 unit course. In terms of bed sizes they're standard twin beds. If you are over 6'2" (like myself), you'll have to apply for a bed extension. There's an accommodation form you can get and you'll have to have a doctor sign it.

Hope that helps.

1A06 was easy as hell but apparently the prof I had doesn't teach it anymore.

1X03 requires a bit of memorizing and there's a couple of assignments.

Sociology 1A06 was easy, but I had Dr. Shaffir, and I don't think he teaches it anymore. If you want to get into Sociology you have to take that course, though. It shouldn't be too tough. If you need help in the course, feel free to message me on here and I'll try to help out. I'm going into my fifth year Sociology.

As for an elective, I'd recommend Anthropology 1A03. It works well with Sociology and is really interesting.

I'd recommend Anthro 1A03 or Indigenous Studies 1A03/1AA3.

As already mentioned, you are not eligible to take the Arts Sci course as you aren't an Arts Sci.

If you're interested in math, take math 1B03, as it's required for pretty much every upper-year math course. It's probably beneficial if you're minoring in computer science, anyway.

Math 1X03 is only open to Math & Stats students, so you would be taking Math 1A03 (same course content, but offered at different times).

Just an addition to that... try to avoid Dr. Arratia for Anthro 1A03. That class was the worst I've had. "Tutorials" were nothing more than online quizzes, 3 per week which were marked for participation. Her lectures were dry, she sucked my interest in anthro right out of me. :/

Thank you everyone for the advice so far! I'm coming from an American Highschool and I'm going to get my AP grades back sometime in the next few weeks. If I did well enough on those, how do I go about using them to apply for credit in courses?
