First Year Humanities Help
Hey,
My name's Shavayah and I'm a first year student going into humanities, hoping to major in communication studies in the future. Frankly, I'm super excited about university but also a little nervous. So, if anyone has taken any of the first year course below, your opinions, advice, or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Also, any first year students taking of the class with me, let me know!

Have you check the course outlines: Course Outlines
Or perhaps course reviews: Course Reviews

and you're third year.... how was your transition from high school to uni?

I don't think it's a new course, it might just not have been reviewed by anyone.
Transition was quite great for me. I'm not in the same program so I won't say anything about Academics.
I lived in residence in first year and I had a ton of fun. The people were really great. It was a bit strange living away from home. Before I moved into residence I wanted to go home every week or two if possible. But I loved residence and independence so much I actually barely went home. The food was a big change, especially residence food. I won't ever forget it, it was quite an experience. I didn't really like it that much, but I'll be trying out the new Centro place when it opens. I hope it'll be different.
Now I live off-campus which was another big change. I now had to cook my own food, which I have never done before. At first I used to always overcook my food because I was sacred of food poisoning but I got a lot better at it after a couple weeks. Now I enjoy cooking and eating my own food ^-^

Welcome to Mac.
Sociology 1A06 was piss easy when I had it first year. On the other hand, I had the "easier" prof who doesn't teach the course anymore. Good luck.

Monica told me it was easy last year too. I'm trying to get into it this year, but so far it's still full. I'm in MM 1B03 though, and will see you in class if it's the 2nd term evening class!

I really enjoyed Inquiry. Basically all you did all term was work on your own research essay on a topic of your choosing based on a larger umbrella topic you're entire class decides on. For example with Donaldson our class decided on the larger topic of Heroes. Under this larger topic everyone chose their own sub-topic to write about. Some people wrote about specific people, some wrote about heroic topics or things about heroes etc. I chose to write about Righteous Gentiles as heroes. I liked how open it was, I got to research and write on something I was interested in, its less restrictive than basically any other course. I think its helpful in developing research and writing skills as well.
As Multimedia is my major I took MMEDIA 1B03 as well. Its hard to get into but its also a great course. When I took it in first year you learned Photoshop techniques and did readings and projects revolving around digital images. We also created our own website using a few different programs and incorporating our learned Photoshop techniques.
Commuting isn't that bad. I didn't do it in first year but I did it this past year and found it less convenient than residence but it really wasn't all bad. Where are you commuting from?
Just some tips since you're commuting make sure to really get involved Welcome Week. In residence its a lot easier to meet other students and make friends but the way Welcome Week is set up its still totally doable for off-campus students. Be sure to check out all your faculty and SOCS (Society of Off-Campus Students) events during the week to meet people and make some friends who will also being living off-campus, and who will be in your classes.
