First year life sciences course selection
Hello,
I wanted to get some insight into the courses that are offered at the life science 1 progam (particularly from the people that have already finished their 1st year L.S ).

What are your opinions? Which course would you recommend and why (in terms of easiness, variety, etc)?

Please

Thankyou in Advance

Most people take two chemistry courses (1A03, 1AA3).

Most take two biology courses (Bio 1A03, 1M03).

A lot of people take psych 1, and perhaps psych 2 (1X03, 1XX3). Psych 2 is a lot more work but easier IMO.

There's physics 1L03 for those who didn't take gr12 physics, and 1b03 for those who did.
There's math 1LS3 for those who suck at math, or 1A03 otherwise.

If you take those 8 courses, that's a solid framework that should allow you to get into most second year programs, and leaves room for two electives that can be other science courses or whatever you want.

If psych is not required for the program you want to enter in 2nd year (which you should begin considering sometime when the school year starts, because each program major has pre-requisite first year courses you must meet), and you don't like psych, then I suggest not taking Pysch 2 (1XX3).

If you're not entering a math-heavy program (like me), then taking Math 1LS3, 1LT3 is totally alrighty. You wont be at any sort of disadvantage.

If you took Gr12 Physics, then take Physics 1B03.

I took Bio 1A03, 1M03; Chem 1A03, 1AA3; Math 1A03, 1AA3; Phys 1B03, 1BB3; Psych 1X03; Envrio Sc 1A03 this past year in life science I.

Note that you can take 2 bios + 1 psych or 2 psych + 1 bio, so opted for the 1 psych option since I didn't want to study psych, which also sort of gave me an elective. Though make sure you look at level II programs you are interested in and make sure you fulfill those requirements, that's how I decided which courses to take.

I like and am good at math so I took the 1A03 and 1AA3 courses. I had also considered the Honours Biology and Environmental Science program so I took Enviro Sc 1A03. Physics 1BB3 I decided to take because two programs I took interest in (Biochemistry and Chemical Biology) recommended it.

You should DEFINITELY take Chem 1A03+1AA3 and Bio 1M03+1A03.
You should also definitely take one of math 1LS3 or 1A03 (I'd personally recommend 1A03, but that debate has been done to death on these forums, so if you're trying to decide you can do a search through old threads)...either way, make sure you take one of them.
If you've taken gr12 physics, then you should take phys 1B03. If you haven't, take 1L03 and you will likely end up taking 1B03 for one reason or another at a later time. You can do it in first year also if you'd like.
Most life sci kids take psych 1X03, and many also take 1XX3...depends what programs you're interested in for second year.
My electives were kin 1Y03+1YY3, which were awesome, but super difficult to get into.

Did you find your kin 1Y03 and kin 1YY3 classes/labs quite challenging in addition to the mandatory classes you had to take???

Not at all. The labs are very easy (sort of a mix of lab and tutorial), and the marks come from the prelab quizzes, not the labs themselves. You just have to show up, and it's an effective way of studying. The courses were a lot of fun and definitely some of the easier ones I took.

Thank you for all the help
This is what I have chosen for my year:

Term 1:
BIOLOGY1A03
CHEM 1A03
HTH SCI 1BS0___ REQ
KINESIOL 1Y03
PHYSICS 1L03
PSYCH 1X03
SCIENCE 1A00 C01 ___ REQ

Term 2:

BIOLOGY1M03

CHEM1AA3

ENVIRSC 1A03

MATH1LS3
PHYSICS 1B03
How does this timetable look? Also, I have taken physics 12 as well as calc 12, but the SOLAR website doesnt allow me to take 1B03 with 1L03.. any suggestions? And I didnt pay my tuition fee yet because i am waiting for OSAP, does this leave me at risk? I mean, if i got into kin but didnt pay yet does this gurantee me a spot (applied on SOLAR and OK'd) ?

If you took gr12 physics then you shouldnt take 1L03 at all. Just do 1B03.
I don't think anyone has paid their tuition yet; it's not due til Sept 1.

Hi,
I don't want to take it, but the SOLAR website doesn't allow me phy 1B03 without 1L03, it says that it is a prereq...

Did you take grade 12 physics?

Oh...you wrote 'with' instead of 'without' before, hence my confusion. If you have gr12 physics, then contact the science office. You might need to provide proof you've taken it, they can advise you as to how to go about doing that.

If you are e-mailing them, you might as well just send them a copy of your highschool report card.

I think that's because calc (1LS3 or 1AA3) has to be taken before or at the same time as 1B03. Same thing happened to me last year. Unfortunately, this will mess up your schedule as it did to me :( But it's better than wasting your time and money on a course you don't need or want.
