First Year Student, Second Year course as elective
Hi, I'm a first year commerce student at mac and was wondering if I could take a 2nd year commerce course as an elective for 2nd term for which I've already satisfied the prerequisites? I'd rather take that then a first year elective which I have no interest in and will probably do worse in.

I'm sure if you speak with an academic advisor an exception can be made, however I'm not too sure if its possible. I'm pretty sure as per the undergraduate calender you need to complete 30 units of first year courses to be admitted into a second year program.

I remember asking in first year if I could take second year credits, but I vaguely remember the associate dean's people telling me that this was not allowed.

You should pester them and find out for sure.

If the second year course you want is required for your program then it wouldn't be an elective, you would just be taking a course early

As long as you meet the requirements, yes you can.
I don't recommend it though.

In upper year commerce you have commerce electives and non-commerce electives. You can't substitute non-commerce electives (in first year) for commerce electives. Also, depending on what you are wanting to take, it may actually be required like someone said above so it wouldn't meet your first year elective requirement.

You actually cannot take a 2nd year Commerce class in 1st year as you have not yet completed Commerce 1E03. However, you may be able to take Econ 2X03, a required course for 2nd year Commerce; which is a hard course so if you have an easy course load next semester, try to take 2X03 to alleviate some stress next year.

In my first year I took Econ 2J03 as an elective (Environmental Economics) and I am currently a 3rd year Commerce student.
