First Year Surprises
So, what were some of the surprises/shocks you faced in first-year?
The grades? Home work? The amount of studying per day...?
To know what can throw us off might help us first-years feel more prepared to enter University

The fact that nobody really cares how you do in class. Theres nobody pushing you to do well really. It's all up to you. Nobody cares if you do your homework, its your responsibility.

I love it.

Haha. I was going to say, I almost prefer that. I'm so excited for university! Just nice to not have people breathing down your back 24/7 other than yourself.

Wow, I'd say... the thing that's different from highschool, is that you're not given little assignments that can sort of track how well you're doing in the class. Sometimes it's dependent on like one or two assignments + a final. You really have to give everything your all.

1) amount of assignments
2)lower grades. (went from 85% avg in high school down to 72% 1st semster and finishing with 80% 2nd semster )
3) studying (never did in high school
4) losing lots of marks on things that were minor in my opinion.

The first Math test for Math 1Z04. I think it was the first one ever in University...Didn't do so well lol not because it was hard or anything but cause I hardly did any math homework in highschool and still managed to get good grades. As many will tell you thats not the case in University...

Definitively. You HAVE to study and do work in university. You might have been able to get good/great marks in highschool without studying, but it's very different in university.

I personally never studied (or rarely studied) in highschool and I did very well. When I got to university, it was a totally different story. I had to study in order to remember things and do well tests and exams. I don't remember the workload in highschool because I never studied, but there is A LOT of information you learn in university and they test you on A LOT if not ALL of it.

let's say you're a diligent student from Day 1.
You study, attend classes, tutorials, communicate with professors and TAs, speak to the CSD if you're having problems that would affect academic performance, relax, participate outside the class to maintain balance and prevent stress, eat and drink, sleep well, and steal some of the neurons of some smart people...I won't say who...they may be listening...in your spare time...

Anything else to "seal" the deal?
