Thats correct. Any credits exceeding 48 in first year courses don't count towards your degree.
So assuming you took a full year in first year (30 credits), that leaves you with 18 left.
So in your 2-4th years, you can take up to 6 first year courses as electives. Any more and they won't count towards your degree and you'll have taken them for fun and basically a waste of money.
