Should I take first year electives in second year?
I wasn't able to take either math I or II, or the second physics 1BB3, when applying for first year courses. Should I take these courses next year, or should I apply for second year courses? Does it matter what year the course is in? These would all be electives for me.

There are no restrictions for you to take only second year courses in second year, etc. You can do that. Just be careful with first year courses: you are not allowed to exceed a total of 48 units of first year courses.

I did not know about 48 rule. Do they not count for you GPA? What if you want to a second major which goes over that limit?

all honours programs regardless of whether or not their are combined programs only allow 48 units of first year courses.

although i'm not sure if engineering allows more than that.

wait; so if I take a first year course in second year, it doesn't count towards my GPA? Is that not disadvantageous?

No that's not what it means. You just can't take over a certain amount of first year courses.

In first year you probably took 30 Units worth of Level 1 courses so in the rest of your years you can't take more than 18 units worth or 6 3 Unit Level 1 courses or 3 6 unit Level 1 courses, or a combination that won't put you over 48 Units of Level 1 courses.

So if you wanted to take 2 first year 3 unit electives in 3rd year, and 1 in 4th year that would be okay, they would count for your GPA.

yeah Stefanie is right... Although I don't know if necessarily, courses don't count for your GPA if you take a course over the 48 unit limit.

Regardless, pretty much all first year courses are introductory courses anyway, so basically, don't sample too much and choose your 1st year courses wisely. Note that a number of 2nd year and even 3rd yr courses are open to anyone (usually it's something like Level II or above) w/out any prereqs, so if you want to diversify you can consider those instead of taking another 1st year course.
