First Years: How was your transition?
Hey everyone!

Now that first year is nearly over, I am curious to see how everyone fared academically in their first year in University. I am also in first year and I have to say it was very different from high school. Are there are first years out there who want to share there opinions?

I am currently doing a survey about people's transition from first year into university and I would love if you can just take 5 mins to fill in this survey. If you don't feel comfortable posting some of the more personal details about your marks online, I would really appreciate it if you could send it to me in a private message or email your response to me. My email address is: [email protected]

Again I thank everyone for their help and hope everyone had a great experience.

P.S. If any upper years remember their high school and first year, it would be greatly appreciated if you can also participate.

The Survey:

What Program are you in?

1. What was your High School Average (Top 6 Marks) when entering University?

2. How satisfied were you with your marks? Please rank on a scale of one to 7, with one (1) being completely unsatisfied and seven (7) being completely satisfied.
1. Completely Unsatisfied 2. Very Unsatisfied 3. Somewhat Unsatisfied 4. Indifferent 5. Somewhat Satisfied 6. Very Satisfied 7. Completely Satisfied

3. How prepared for First Year did you feel when you left High School? Please rank on a scale of one to 7, with one (1) being completely unprepared and seven (7) being completely prepared. Please circle the most appropriate response.
1.Completely unprepared 2.Very unprepared 3. Somewhat unprepared 4.Indifferent
Preparedness 5.Somewhat Prepared 6. Very Prepared 7.Completely Prepared

4. After your First Year experience, how well do you think your High School prepared you now? Please pick the most appropriate response.
1.Completely unprepared 2.Very unprepared 3. Somewhat unprepared 4.Indifferent
Preparedness 5.Somewhat Prepared 6. Very Prepared 7.Completely Prepared

5. What was your First Year Tem 1 average?

6. How satisfied were you with your marks? Please circle the most appropriate response.
1. Completely Unsatisfied 2. Very Unsatisfied 3. Somewhat Unsatisfied 4. Indifferent 5. Somewhat Satisfied 6. Very Satisfied 7. Completely Satisfied

7. How did you find the transition from grade 12 into First year?
1. Completely Difficult 2. Very Difficult 3.Somewhat Difficult 4. Indifferent
(No change) 5. Somewhat Good 6. Very Good 7. Completely Good

8. Please describe why you think your response is the way it is? Please even just a few words would be an excellent answer in order to better equipping incoming First Years.

9. What skills do you believe would have better prepared you for the university experience?

10. What advice do you have to give grade 12 students entering university which would help with their transition?

11. What did they struggle with most during your adjustment? What essential university sill did you find most difficult to grasp?

12. Would you participate in a program that taught all the aforementioned skills?

13. Did you repeat any courses or do you plan on doing so in summer school? If so how many are they and why do you think you are doing so?

Thank you so much for your responses and have a nice day! Good luck with your university experience and we wish you all the best.

THANKS!

Out of curiosity, what is this survey for? A class/campus club, or just out of personal interest?

@manap

Trust me, I don't have anything to be insecure about. I'm very satisfied with them.

@ alh24

I need this info because I going back to my high school to give a presentation to the grade 12 class about what to expect coming into university. I wanted them to learn from previous experience about how to properly transition.

alh24, RyanC all say thanks to SirPhil for this post.

Instead of taking a survey of random people, why don't you go to your school and talk about your personal experiences? This makes you look more legit, or talk about experiences your friends had or how the coped with the changes.

I dont know if anyone else noticed this but the essay writing techniques they teach you in high school (Point-proof, point-proof, point-proof) is totally incorrect and professors in university do not like it. Not sure if this is worth mentioning but I did notice that it caused me to lose a lot of marks from my first few assignments.

It's pretty reasonable to ask who "we" is when no information was stated in the original post as to who was taking this information and for what purpose. Did you know the answer to my question before he answered it?

That's cool. Are you giving the presentation yourself, or are they bringing back a bunch of past students for it?
