The reason is because it's cheap and most of the world is dirt poor. All you need is something remotely round to kick and some sticks or piles of dirt for goals.

Hockey, football, baseball, and even basketball require more expensive equipment than soccer. With the exception of basketball, some of the equipment is incredibly expensive.

People play soccer because all you need is a ball. That's it. You don't need shoes. You don't need nets. You can play it on concrete, grass, sand etc.

If hockey or baseball or football or any other sport was that inexpensive soccer would have competition. But sports are expensive and 90% of the world or something ridiculous is poor, so thats why they play it- because they can't afford to play anything else.

Sad but true.

I think the attempts and goals outweigh the lengthy setting up. There are also counter-attacks. I don't mind watching the sport, but it's definitively not my favourite.
