GO Transit Fares Increase Saturday March 14

Yup, you read it right. GO Transit is increasing their fares for the second time in a year (March 15 2008).

There is presently NO INFORMATION on the GO Transit website. However, there is information available on the Compass website. <3 Compass!!

Any un-used tickets bought before March 14th will be valid after the fare hike. Remember that two-ride and ten-ride tickets HAVE NO EXPIRATION so you can buy some tickets now to use later!!

You can check out articles from the Toronto Star and City News in addition to Metro News.

1) A $0.25 increase after a $0.15 increase in a year is lame.
2) GO not having any information on their website is lame.

Unrelated, but still lame: insomnia.

They still run. The schedule will be slightly different, however (not as many trips each day, I doubt trips back to Mac Sundays). The schedule for May til the end of August should be out by mid-April at the latest.

Reject the fare increase!
GO Transit raised fares by 25 cents per ride effective March 14 with one week's notice to the public, before GO Transit publishes its Annual Report, and during a worldwide economic recession. A single ride from Oakville to Union Station will increase from $6 to $6.25 (+4.16%) and a monthly pass from Oakville to Union Station will increase $10 from $195 to $205 (+5.13%). A spokesperson for GO Transit states the fare increase is in line with inflation. Inflation is pegged at 2.4% for 2008 and 1.10% for 2009. GO recovers 82 per cent of its operating revenue through fares, one of the highest transit cost recovery rates in the world.

To that end, we the undersigned, as riders and/or Ontario taxpayers, sign this petition to demand from GO Transit and the Ministry of Transportation, the following:

- GO Transit does not raise its fares for 2009.

- GO Transit publishes its Annual Report prior to rate increases.

- GO Transit decreases the cost recovery ratio immediately for 2009, resulting in a net fare decrease.

- GO Transit to further reduce it's fare to pre-2008 levels to reflect the recent 40% drop in fuel prices.

SIGN THE PETITION
